BaZi Luck Pillars (Da Yun 大运)

While the natal BaZi chart shows your potential — the "hand you were dealt" — the Luck Pillars (大运, Dà Yùn) show when different aspects of that potential will manifest. Each Luck Pillar spans approximately 10 years, creating a timeline of life phases.

How Luck Pillars Are Calculated

The direction of the Luck Pillar sequence depends on two factors:

1. The polarity of the year stem — Yang (+) or Yin (−)
2. The gender of the person — Male or Female

Forward Direction

• Yang year stem + Male — Luck Pillars move forward through the stems and branches
• Yin year stem + Female — Luck Pillars move forward

Backward Direction

• Yang year stem + Female — Luck Pillars move backward
• Yin year stem + Male — Luck Pillars move backward

The starting point is the month pillar of the natal chart. Forward means the next stem-branch pair in the sexagenary cycle; backward means the previous pair.

Calculating the Starting Age

The starting age of the first Luck Pillar is determined by counting the days from the birth date to the nearest solar term (Jie 节):

• Forward direction — Count forward to the next Jie solar term
• Backward direction — Count backward to the previous Jie solar term

Every 3 days = 1 year. So if there are 15 days to the next solar term, the first Luck Pillar begins at age 5.

Interpreting Luck Pillars

Each Luck Pillar adds a new stem-branch pair to your chart for 10 years. This pair interacts with your natal pillars through:

Element Interactions

• Generating — The luck pillar's element feeds your Day Master (supportive)
• Controlling — The luck pillar's element controls your Day Master (challenging)
• Being controlled — Your Day Master controls the luck pillar's element (you gain power)

Ten God Activation

The stem of the Luck Pillar generates a Ten God relative to your Day Master. When a Wealth star appears in a Luck Pillar, financial matters become prominent. When an Officer star appears, career and authority themes activate.

Branch Interactions

The branch of the Luck Pillar can form clashes, combinations, and punishments with your natal branches, creating dynamic events:

• Clash (冲) — Sudden changes, conflicts, movement
• Combination (合) — New relationships, alliances, merging of energies
• Punishment (刑) — Legal issues, health problems, moral tests
• Harm (害) — Hidden obstacles, betrayal

Favorable vs. Unfavorable Pillars

Whether a Luck Pillar is favorable depends on the strength of your Day Master:

• Strong Day Master — Favors Output, Wealth, and Officer elements (which drain excess energy)
• Weak Day Master — Favors Resource and Peer elements (which provide support)

A favorable Luck Pillar brings opportunities, smooth progress, and achievement in the relevant life area. An unfavorable one brings challenges, obstacles, and lessons — but also growth.

The Flow of Life

Typically, a person experiences 6–8 Luck Pillars in a lifetime. The sequence creates a narrative arc:

1. Early life (1st–2nd Luck Pillars) — Childhood, education, family environment
2. Young adulthood (3rd–4th Luck Pillars) — Career establishment, relationships
3. Middle age (5th–6th Luck Pillars) — Peak achievement, family, wealth
4. Later life (7th–8th Luck Pillars) — Legacy, wisdom, reflection
