BaZi Four Pillars: An Introduction
BaZi (八字), meaning "Eight Characters," is a system of Chinese destiny analysis that has been used for over a thousand years. It is also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny because it constructs four pillars — one each for the year, month, day, and hour of birth — each composed of two characters (a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch), giving eight characters total.
The Four Pillars

The Day Stem (the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar) is the most important — it represents the Day Master, the core self of the chart.
Heavenly Stems (天干)
The ten Heavenly Stems represent heavenly energy. They are divided into five elements, each with a Yang (+) and Yin (−) polarity:

The five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — are the foundation of BaZi analysis. They interact through two cycles:
Generating Cycle (相生)
Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood
Controlling Cycle (相克)
Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood
The balance (or imbalance) of elements in a BaZi chart reveals strengths, weaknesses, and life tendencies.
The Ten Gods (十神)
The Ten Gods (also called Ten Stars) describe the relationship between the Day Master and other stems in the chart. They are the key to interpreting BaZi:

Each Ten God carries specific family relationships that differ for men and women, making the BaZi chart a rich tool for understanding family dynamics, career potential, and relationship patterns.
Hidden Stems (藏干)
Each Earthly Branch contains one or more hidden Heavenly Stems — these are the energies stored within the branch. The main Qi (本气) is the primary stem, while secondary stems represent additional influences. Hidden stems reveal latent potentials and additional Ten God relationships within each pillar.
Nayin (纳音)
The Nayin, or "melodic element," is a poetic classification assigned to each pillar's stem-branch combination. There are 30 Nayin elements (e.g., "Wood of the Pine" — 松柏木), each carrying symbolic meaning that adds depth to the pillar's interpretation.
Kong Wang (空亡)
Kong Wang, meaning "void" or "emptiness," refers to branches that are "missing" from a pillar's sexagenary cycle pair. Kong Wang can indicate areas where energy is dispersed, delayed, or needs special attention. It is not necessarily negative — it can represent spiritual insight, detachment, or areas where conventional outcomes are altered.
Luck Pillars (大运 / Da Yun)
Beyond the natal chart, BaZi uses Luck Pillars to track life phases. Each Luck Pillar spans approximately 10 years and follows a forward or backward sequence based on the year stem's polarity and the person's gender. The Luck Pillars reveal when different elements and Ten Gods become active, creating a timeline of opportunity and challenge throughout life.
